Short Documentary (Non-League Football Documentary)

This video is a short documentary about Non-league football and that it is just as good as premier league football. The documentary shows the binary opposition of the riches of the premier league Vs Non-league football teams who struggle finically. The documentary shows the life of two Lancashire team non league football teams, Chorley and Bamber bridge. The target audience for this short documentary would most likely be males and football fans aged from 20+.
In this essay, it shall therefore be discussed how the micro elements of mise-en-scene and camera work is used to create a macro meaning of representation of wealth and power to engage the audience.
This short documentary shows the difference in wealth between the premiership and non-league clubs like Chorley and Bamber Bridge. It does this my using juxtaposition. It does this by showing the audience big stadiums with good facilitates, such as old Trafford. It then fades to the Bamber Bridge stadium which is a tiny and low budgeted stadium. This shows how wide the gap is between the finical capabilities of the lower leagues and the premier league.
Generic settings include being shot on location. The documentary is shot at Bamber Bridge Stadium. It has been shot at Bamber Bridge stadium to show the difference in a big premier league stadium and show how run down it is. The audience will more than likely know of how the premiership looks and how rich it is. So this being set at the Bamber Bridge stadium gives the audience a first impression of how low budgeted the club is.
They also interview a working class man which is stereotypical of grass roots football because traditionally the people that got to these matches are from working class families and may not be able to afford to go to football in higher divisions. Also when they are showing the match that Bamber bridge are playing at the bottom of the screen there is some text that compares the prices of Bamber bridge match’s compared to Manchester matches and how much top flight players get paid this connotes that the lower leagues are better value for money than higher leagues. Also some of the stands are terracing so this shows that they haven’t got the funds to afford seating. Show this shows they are poorer than professional clubs.
At the start of the documentary there is a montage clip of magazine front covers which all show premiership teams or premiership players. This is to show that non- league teams don’t get any press coverage so therefore really struggle to build up a fan base.
The Chairman talks about how the club is a family oriented club this is to try to attract people to lower league football.
Lighting and colouring have been used effectively to create representations of wealth.
At the start of the documentary it shows big premiership stadiums with very light brightening and bright colours that looks very appealing. It then shows non- league stadiums very cloudy and dull this is done to make the stadium look even more run down and non- appealing.

Camera work is uses to create a variety of effects and can therefore contributed to representations of power and wealth in different ways.
A extreme close up shot is a picture taken at extremely close range. In the documentary an extreme close up is taken to show a Chelsea football shirt with price underneath it saying £49.00. This shows that the premiership is wealth because the clubs can sell there football shirts at approximately £50. This also shows they have good publicity because the football shirt is advertising in a magazine.
A close up of Wigan’s stadium show a nice new stadium with good facilities then the Manchester united ground which is very big with a perfect football pitch. It then fades in to a very run down and very small. Also has doesn’t have stands at each side of the pitch. This has been done he Bamber Bridge stadium. The Bamber Bridge stadium (which is non-league) is very run to show the audience the richness in the premiership and how poor non-league clubs are.
A two shot is a shot with two people in it. A two shot is used to show a player (robinho) and manager (Mark Hughes) both holding a Manchester city shirt saying robinho on the back of the shirt. Both of the men are very smartly dressed in the shot some this represents them as being wealthy. Also it is show a top class football player is signing for Manchester city. Some this suggest Manchester city are wealth because they can afford to sign a big name play such as robinho.

Short Film Essay (Black Button)

The video is a stereotypical 21st century short film, aimed at the male and female. Probably teen-adult audience because it is mysterious and a younger audience many not understand what is happening. The clip shows the binary oppositions of good vs. evil because Geoffrey had a choice to kill someone and take ten million dollars. The short film has high production values because there are props such as a golden lamp, silver door handle, big symbolic chair. The sub genre of black button is fantasy because everything that is happening is mysterious.
In this essay, it shall therefore be discussed how the micro elements of mise-en-scne and camera work is used to create a macro meaning of representation of wealth and power to engage the audience .
Generic settings include set design inside a white room. The colour white represents and importance. Iconography such as silver door handles, golden lamp, and white briefcase represents wealth and richness.
Character costumes have been used effectively to represent wealth and dominance. The mysterious man is dressed in a smart black suit so he looks smart and dressed well. Geoffrey is dressed a bit untidy so this suggests he is less dominate than the mysterious man.
Acting gestures from Geoffrey such as his mouth wide open and looking around shows Geoffrey as being confused and not knowing where he is. Also his eyes watering and shaking his head show he is upset by the mysterious man. This represents mysterious man as being more dominate than Geoffrey.
The mysterious man is shown to be more wealthy and dominate because he has props such as a big wide desk, golden lamp and a white briefcase that contains 10 million dollars. Geoffrey is represented as being less wealthy and less dominate as the mysterious man because he has no props. The two characters are both sat on chairs. The mysterious man has been represented as richer and more powerful because he is sat on a large symbolic oak chair. Geoffrey is seen less powerful and less important so he is sat on a small wooded chair.
Lighting and colouring have been used effectively to create representations of wealth and power. The mysterious mans room is brightly lit so this shows he is dominant. When it show a flash back to Geoffrey’s car crash the scene is dark and badly lit to show that he is less dominate. Light colours such as white symbolise purity and wealth. The mysterious mans room is all white and he has a white briefcase that contains ten million dollars. This symbolises the mysterious man as being rich and dominate.
Camera work is uses to create a variety of effects and can therefore contributed to representations of power and wealth in different ways.
Close up shots are used to emphasise reactions and emotions of characters. A close up shot of Geoffrey shows him being confused because he doesn’t no where he is. This represents Geoffrey as being less dominate because he is confused and lost.
Also another close up shot shows Geoffrey being less dominate. He is trying to open the door to get out of the white room but the door is locked so he cant get out. Also the close up shot shows a shinny silver door handle so this represents wealth form the silver door handle and less dominance because the mysterious man has locked him in the white room
A medium shot of the mysterious man show him being dominate because it shows him dressed smartly with a white background behind him. This shows his importance.
Objective POV shots (Over the shoulder shot) are used to put the audience in the action and show us what a character is looking at. In Black Button POV a shot is used to show dominance and power. This is shows that Geoffrey is less dominate than the mysterious man because the POV shot shows Geoffrey being rushed into making a bad decision by the mysterious man.
A two shot is a shot with two people in it, often to show convocation. The two shot also shows the mysterious man being wealth and more powerful than Geoffrey. This has been shown by showing the mysterious man sitting on a large symbolic chair and Geoffrey sat on a little wooden chair/stool.

Camera movement is often used effectively to engage the audience with action. Zoom is used to show the mysterious man and the button. It then zooms into the button. This shows that the mysterious man is dominate because he knows what the button does and Geoffrey doesn’t.
Sound is used in this short film all the way. The music is playing in the background and it is a mysterious melody that is being played. The music fits into the short film because the short film is also mysterious and know one understands what is happening until the end when he realises he is dead.

Music Video Essay (Holiday, Dizzee Rascal)

The video is a aimed at a young male audience. This is because the music video is showing lots of women in swimming outfits to portray them as objects to the male audience. The binary opposition in the music video is Men vs. Women. The video is showing them as sex symbols and the males as more dominant important figures. The sub genre of music video is class and gender. The mode of address is male to female because of the objectifying involved in the video. Also this music video show high production values.
In this essay, it shall therefore be discussed how the micro elements of mise-en-scene and camera work is used to create a macro meaning of representation of class and gender to engage the audience .
The clip is mostly related to gender and age. It is showing males as more important figures to females. In the music video females are being classed as objects. It is also reprsents that young adults are know for partying and having a good time like they are doing in the video. The music video is also aimed at class, it show the wealth of them and how they use money if with the women and partying at big houses with swimming pools.
The video is located in a set design, it is set at a big house in a hot sunny country with a big swimming pool. The clip represntes wealth with all these bright colours, for example, very sunny, bright blue swimming pool, colour full swim suits and dizzee rascal is whering a very colourful T-shirt. It also shows that they are in a wealthy warm summer resort, so this connotes that they have money and class.
The male protagonist in the clip, Dizzee Rascal who is the singer of the song, is dressed in a white suit to show he is important and also wearing dark sunglasses to represent the mysteriousness of the singer. This shows that he is the most important person in music video and that everyone looks up to him as an authoritative figure. He is also wears lots of gold jewellery and showing off that he has lots of money. This represents wealth and class. He is also a stereotype of higher class.
In the music video there are more females than males. This is because the males are the more imprortant and dominate figures. The other males in the music videois dressed with a pink T-shirt and a light grey hat. Also he has lots of jewellery, which is round his neck and on his wrist. This also represents the wealth and dominance of the males in the music video.
Props are used in the music video to connote wealth. The woman at the start of the clip is on her phone, this is stereotypical of women, always on her mobile phone to other people. This represents wealth having a mobile phone with her. Other props are champagne glasses in the characters hands, this is portraying the high class of the people involved because thay can afford to drink champange. The clip shows the more posh characters have champagne other than the lower class stereotypical characters.
The main female protagonist is represented as an object, she is wearing abikini and sunglasses. This shows that they are stereotypically shown as sex symbols to the males. All the other women in the clip are represented in the same way, with short swim outfits to grab male attention.
The lighting involved in the music video is bright natural colour. It is set outside in a sunny holiday destination with blue skies and a very bright sun. This connotes warmth and wealth because it shows that they are in a highly exotic holiday area, obviously portraying they have money and can afford there own villa, and a highly class place.
Camera work and mise’ en scene, is used to represent gender in the clip. Tracking is used in a stereotypical way. When following the woman’s legs, when she is walking the dog, following her along the side of the pool, with her high heels on and tanned legs, it is objectifying them, and saying that stereotypically, all men care about is looks and what the women are like on the outside. A high angle shot is also used in the clip looking down on to the women sat in the pool, to show she is a lower figure, and that people look down on women, just portraying them as sex symbols and nothing else. A low angle shot is also used looking up on the main male protagonist in the clip, showing that people look up to him, and that he is an important figure. A wide angle shot is used in the clip when all the characters are dancing around the pool, this shows all the components in the scene, with the men in there suits or shirts and women in there bikini’s, also with the palm trees around the pool, to connote the wealth of the characters. An ellipsis is also used at the start of the video when it cuts to another scene from the women on the phone, to the male sat down outside the pool; this is used to shorten time so that the video is continuous throughout, and can move to another scene without having to follow the women into the next area.
The sound involved in the clip is music used for the song. The music is a dance track, with fast paced music. The music is aimed at young adults/teenages because of the revolution nowadays, with younger people listening to dance music. The lyrics include “get a passport and your bikini, you need a holiday come see me, i know your tired of the same old scenery but I can change all that so easily” these lyrics are aimed at the young women looking to go on holiday looking for a man, to go and see him to party and have a good time. Only music involved is the sounds, there are no sounds effects as it is a popular chart song that doesn’t need any specific effects to be involved.
