Music Video Essay (Holiday, Dizzee Rascal)

The video is a aimed at a young male audience. This is because the music video is showing lots of women in swimming outfits to portray them as objects to the male audience. The binary opposition in the music video is Men vs. Women. The video is showing them as sex symbols and the males as more dominant important figures. The sub genre of music video is class and gender. The mode of address is male to female because of the objectifying involved in the video. Also this music video show high production values.
In this essay, it shall therefore be discussed how the micro elements of mise-en-scene and camera work is used to create a macro meaning of representation of class and gender to engage the audience .
The clip is mostly related to gender and age. It is showing males as more important figures to females. In the music video females are being classed as objects. It is also reprsents that young adults are know for partying and having a good time like they are doing in the video. The music video is also aimed at class, it show the wealth of them and how they use money if with the women and partying at big houses with swimming pools.
The video is located in a set design, it is set at a big house in a hot sunny country with a big swimming pool. The clip represntes wealth with all these bright colours, for example, very sunny, bright blue swimming pool, colour full swim suits and dizzee rascal is whering a very colourful T-shirt. It also shows that they are in a wealthy warm summer resort, so this connotes that they have money and class.
The male protagonist in the clip, Dizzee Rascal who is the singer of the song, is dressed in a white suit to show he is important and also wearing dark sunglasses to represent the mysteriousness of the singer. This shows that he is the most important person in music video and that everyone looks up to him as an authoritative figure. He is also wears lots of gold jewellery and showing off that he has lots of money. This represents wealth and class. He is also a stereotype of higher class.
In the music video there are more females than males. This is because the males are the more imprortant and dominate figures. The other males in the music videois dressed with a pink T-shirt and a light grey hat. Also he has lots of jewellery, which is round his neck and on his wrist. This also represents the wealth and dominance of the males in the music video.
Props are used in the music video to connote wealth. The woman at the start of the clip is on her phone, this is stereotypical of women, always on her mobile phone to other people. This represents wealth having a mobile phone with her. Other props are champagne glasses in the characters hands, this is portraying the high class of the people involved because thay can afford to drink champange. The clip shows the more posh characters have champagne other than the lower class stereotypical characters.
The main female protagonist is represented as an object, she is wearing abikini and sunglasses. This shows that they are stereotypically shown as sex symbols to the males. All the other women in the clip are represented in the same way, with short swim outfits to grab male attention.
The lighting involved in the music video is bright natural colour. It is set outside in a sunny holiday destination with blue skies and a very bright sun. This connotes warmth and wealth because it shows that they are in a highly exotic holiday area, obviously portraying they have money and can afford there own villa, and a highly class place.
Camera work and mise’ en scene, is used to represent gender in the clip. Tracking is used in a stereotypical way. When following the woman’s legs, when she is walking the dog, following her along the side of the pool, with her high heels on and tanned legs, it is objectifying them, and saying that stereotypically, all men care about is looks and what the women are like on the outside. A high angle shot is also used in the clip looking down on to the women sat in the pool, to show she is a lower figure, and that people look down on women, just portraying them as sex symbols and nothing else. A low angle shot is also used looking up on the main male protagonist in the clip, showing that people look up to him, and that he is an important figure. A wide angle shot is used in the clip when all the characters are dancing around the pool, this shows all the components in the scene, with the men in there suits or shirts and women in there bikini’s, also with the palm trees around the pool, to connote the wealth of the characters. An ellipsis is also used at the start of the video when it cuts to another scene from the women on the phone, to the male sat down outside the pool; this is used to shorten time so that the video is continuous throughout, and can move to another scene without having to follow the women into the next area.
The sound involved in the clip is music used for the song. The music is a dance track, with fast paced music. The music is aimed at young adults/teenages because of the revolution nowadays, with younger people listening to dance music. The lyrics include “get a passport and your bikini, you need a holiday come see me, i know your tired of the same old scenery but I can change all that so easily” these lyrics are aimed at the young women looking to go on holiday looking for a man, to go and see him to party and have a good time. Only music involved is the sounds, there are no sounds effects as it is a popular chart song that doesn’t need any specific effects to be involved.
