Short FIlm Review

In their first short film together Thomas Ogilvie and Thomas Steadman are sure to score a massive hit with The Secret Companion. Staring Leonie Heavey as lonely girl whose friends (Amy Wright and Laura Lindley) don’t understand her friendship with her unknown companion. Her two friends desperately try to find out who this secret companion could be, will they find out? Or will it remain a secret?

The story begins with Leonie going into college for what seems like another normal day. She meets up with her friends who start interrogating her about her whereabouts over the previous weekend. This adds tension to the start of the film because the girls are not seeing eye to eye and are obviously jealous that their friend has not as much time for them has she previously had. The acting in this scene is excellent with a large build up of tension between the three friends

It then cuts to a flashback of Leonie walking in the park with her friend, but no friend can be seen which leaves many questions in the audience’s mind who is this friend? Is she real? This is a clever move from the directors as it leaves the audience hooked and keen to carry on watching to see if the enigma of who the mysterious friend could be. After this we cut back to the three friends were tempers fray as Leonie’s so called friends mock her new friendship when Leonie storms out Amy and Laura decide to follow her to try and find out who she has been seeing.

I will keep the ending to myself so I don’t spoil the surprise for you. All I can say is that you will be surprised by the ending because I certainly did not see it coming. I like how everything is put up together. This film caught my eye. I rarely find a short film with such a good idea. Secondly, actors are not so bad with Leonie Heavey stealing the show with good support from Amy Wright and Laura Lindley. I thoroughly enjoyed this short film and I recommend it as a must see.

Progression

We have decided in the group to do a short film about a girl with a plant as a best friend. We gave a presentation of all our ideas to the rest of the class. We also gave out questionnaires asking people what ideas they liked. Most of the class said they liked the girl with a plant as a best friend. I have created a pie chart to show what people thought of the idea. 75% of people thought it was very good and 25% of people thought it was good. Also I have been out taking pictures of the location where we will be film our short film.

Short Film Orange Tree

A short film is a, none commercial motion picture. It is shorter than the average feature films. These can be found mainly on the internet, like, YouTube, websites, amateur film maker’s websites, Film4 and at independent cinema’s.
The film “orange tree” is a short film that is on the bbc website. It is about an unhappy man buying an orange tree and becoming happy because of the orange tree. It has an enigma because there is a question that isn’t immediately answered. The man is very unhappy and looks depress. This is because he is lonely and he buys a orange tree that makes him happy again and he takes it every where he goes. The short films binary opposition is humans vs. plants. The target audience for this film would be male and female above the age 16. The short film has an equilibrium, disruption, resolution, new equilibrium.

Equilibrium- The man is upset and looks very depress.
Disruption- The man buys a orange tree. On the way home people stop and ask him where he has bought this wonderful tree from. The orange tree makes him happy and he takes it everywhere he goes.
Resolution- he goes to the counter to buy a drink and when he returns the tree has vanished. He looks around the café and everyone who asked him where he got his tree from have there own plant on the table with them.

Short Documentary (Non-League Football Documentary)

This video is a short documentary about Non-league football and that it is just as good as premier league football. The documentary shows the binary opposition of the riches of the premier league Vs Non-league football teams who struggle finically. The documentary shows the life of two Lancashire team non league football teams, Chorley and Bamber bridge. The target audience for this short documentary would most likely be males and football fans aged from 20+.
In this essay, it shall therefore be discussed how the micro elements of mise-en-scene and camera work is used to create a macro meaning of representation of wealth and power to engage the audience.
This short documentary shows the difference in wealth between the premiership and non-league clubs like Chorley and Bamber Bridge. It does this my using juxtaposition. It does this by showing the audience big stadiums with good facilitates, such as old Trafford. It then fades to the Bamber Bridge stadium which is a tiny and low budgeted stadium. This shows how wide the gap is between the finical capabilities of the lower leagues and the premier league.
Generic settings include being shot on location. The documentary is shot at Bamber Bridge Stadium. It has been shot at Bamber Bridge stadium to show the difference in a big premier league stadium and show how run down it is. The audience will more than likely know of how the premiership looks and how rich it is. So this being set at the Bamber Bridge stadium gives the audience a first impression of how low budgeted the club is.
They also interview a working class man which is stereotypical of grass roots football because traditionally the people that got to these matches are from working class families and may not be able to afford to go to football in higher divisions. Also when they are showing the match that Bamber bridge are playing at the bottom of the screen there is some text that compares the prices of Bamber bridge match’s compared to Manchester matches and how much top flight players get paid this connotes that the lower leagues are better value for money than higher leagues. Also some of the stands are terracing so this shows that they haven’t got the funds to afford seating. Show this shows they are poorer than professional clubs.
At the start of the documentary there is a montage clip of magazine front covers which all show premiership teams or premiership players. This is to show that non- league teams don’t get any press coverage so therefore really struggle to build up a fan base.
The Chairman talks about how the club is a family oriented club this is to try to attract people to lower league football.
Lighting and colouring have been used effectively to create representations of wealth.
At the start of the documentary it shows big premiership stadiums with very light brightening and bright colours that looks very appealing. It then shows non- league stadiums very cloudy and dull this is done to make the stadium look even more run down and non- appealing.

Camera work is uses to create a variety of effects and can therefore contributed to representations of power and wealth in different ways.
A extreme close up shot is a picture taken at extremely close range. In the documentary an extreme close up is taken to show a Chelsea football shirt with price underneath it saying £49.00. This shows that the premiership is wealth because the clubs can sell there football shirts at approximately £50. This also shows they have good publicity because the football shirt is advertising in a magazine.
A close up of Wigan’s stadium show a nice new stadium with good facilities then the Manchester united ground which is very big with a perfect football pitch. It then fades in to a very run down and very small. Also has doesn’t have stands at each side of the pitch. This has been done he Bamber Bridge stadium. The Bamber Bridge stadium (which is non-league) is very run to show the audience the richness in the premiership and how poor non-league clubs are.
A two shot is a shot with two people in it. A two shot is used to show a player (robinho) and manager (Mark Hughes) both holding a Manchester city shirt saying robinho on the back of the shirt. Both of the men are very smartly dressed in the shot some this represents them as being wealthy. Also it is show a top class football player is signing for Manchester city. Some this suggest Manchester city are wealth because they can afford to sign a big name play such as robinho.

Short Film Essay (Black Button)

The video is a stereotypical 21st century short film, aimed at the male and female. Probably teen-adult audience because it is mysterious and a younger audience many not understand what is happening. The clip shows the binary oppositions of good vs. evil because Geoffrey had a choice to kill someone and take ten million dollars. The short film has high production values because there are props such as a golden lamp, silver door handle, big symbolic chair. The sub genre of black button is fantasy because everything that is happening is mysterious.
In this essay, it shall therefore be discussed how the micro elements of mise-en-scne and camera work is used to create a macro meaning of representation of wealth and power to engage the audience .
Generic settings include set design inside a white room. The colour white represents and importance. Iconography such as silver door handles, golden lamp, and white briefcase represents wealth and richness.
Character costumes have been used effectively to represent wealth and dominance. The mysterious man is dressed in a smart black suit so he looks smart and dressed well. Geoffrey is dressed a bit untidy so this suggests he is less dominate than the mysterious man.
Acting gestures from Geoffrey such as his mouth wide open and looking around shows Geoffrey as being confused and not knowing where he is. Also his eyes watering and shaking his head show he is upset by the mysterious man. This represents mysterious man as being more dominate than Geoffrey.
The mysterious man is shown to be more wealthy and dominate because he has props such as a big wide desk, golden lamp and a white briefcase that contains 10 million dollars. Geoffrey is represented as being less wealthy and less dominate as the mysterious man because he has no props. The two characters are both sat on chairs. The mysterious man has been represented as richer and more powerful because he is sat on a large symbolic oak chair. Geoffrey is seen less powerful and less important so he is sat on a small wooded chair.
Lighting and colouring have been used effectively to create representations of wealth and power. The mysterious mans room is brightly lit so this shows he is dominant. When it show a flash back to Geoffrey’s car crash the scene is dark and badly lit to show that he is less dominate. Light colours such as white symbolise purity and wealth. The mysterious mans room is all white and he has a white briefcase that contains ten million dollars. This symbolises the mysterious man as being rich and dominate.
Camera work is uses to create a variety of effects and can therefore contributed to representations of power and wealth in different ways.
Close up shots are used to emphasise reactions and emotions of characters. A close up shot of Geoffrey shows him being confused because he doesn’t no where he is. This represents Geoffrey as being less dominate because he is confused and lost.
Also another close up shot shows Geoffrey being less dominate. He is trying to open the door to get out of the white room but the door is locked so he cant get out. Also the close up shot shows a shinny silver door handle so this represents wealth form the silver door handle and less dominance because the mysterious man has locked him in the white room
A medium shot of the mysterious man show him being dominate because it shows him dressed smartly with a white background behind him. This shows his importance.
Objective POV shots (Over the shoulder shot) are used to put the audience in the action and show us what a character is looking at. In Black Button POV a shot is used to show dominance and power. This is shows that Geoffrey is less dominate than the mysterious man because the POV shot shows Geoffrey being rushed into making a bad decision by the mysterious man.
A two shot is a shot with two people in it, often to show convocation. The two shot also shows the mysterious man being wealth and more powerful than Geoffrey. This has been shown by showing the mysterious man sitting on a large symbolic chair and Geoffrey sat on a little wooden chair/stool.

Camera movement is often used effectively to engage the audience with action. Zoom is used to show the mysterious man and the button. It then zooms into the button. This shows that the mysterious man is dominate because he knows what the button does and Geoffrey doesn’t.
Sound is used in this short film all the way. The music is playing in the background and it is a mysterious melody that is being played. The music fits into the short film because the short film is also mysterious and know one understands what is happening until the end when he realises he is dead.

Music Video Essay (Holiday, Dizzee Rascal)

The video is a aimed at a young male audience. This is because the music video is showing lots of women in swimming outfits to portray them as objects to the male audience. The binary opposition in the music video is Men vs. Women. The video is showing them as sex symbols and the males as more dominant important figures. The sub genre of music video is class and gender. The mode of address is male to female because of the objectifying involved in the video. Also this music video show high production values.
In this essay, it shall therefore be discussed how the micro elements of mise-en-scene and camera work is used to create a macro meaning of representation of class and gender to engage the audience .
The clip is mostly related to gender and age. It is showing males as more important figures to females. In the music video females are being classed as objects. It is also reprsents that young adults are know for partying and having a good time like they are doing in the video. The music video is also aimed at class, it show the wealth of them and how they use money if with the women and partying at big houses with swimming pools.
The video is located in a set design, it is set at a big house in a hot sunny country with a big swimming pool. The clip represntes wealth with all these bright colours, for example, very sunny, bright blue swimming pool, colour full swim suits and dizzee rascal is whering a very colourful T-shirt. It also shows that they are in a wealthy warm summer resort, so this connotes that they have money and class.
The male protagonist in the clip, Dizzee Rascal who is the singer of the song, is dressed in a white suit to show he is important and also wearing dark sunglasses to represent the mysteriousness of the singer. This shows that he is the most important person in music video and that everyone looks up to him as an authoritative figure. He is also wears lots of gold jewellery and showing off that he has lots of money. This represents wealth and class. He is also a stereotype of higher class.
In the music video there are more females than males. This is because the males are the more imprortant and dominate figures. The other males in the music videois dressed with a pink T-shirt and a light grey hat. Also he has lots of jewellery, which is round his neck and on his wrist. This also represents the wealth and dominance of the males in the music video.
Props are used in the music video to connote wealth. The woman at the start of the clip is on her phone, this is stereotypical of women, always on her mobile phone to other people. This represents wealth having a mobile phone with her. Other props are champagne glasses in the characters hands, this is portraying the high class of the people involved because thay can afford to drink champange. The clip shows the more posh characters have champagne other than the lower class stereotypical characters.
The main female protagonist is represented as an object, she is wearing abikini and sunglasses. This shows that they are stereotypically shown as sex symbols to the males. All the other women in the clip are represented in the same way, with short swim outfits to grab male attention.
The lighting involved in the music video is bright natural colour. It is set outside in a sunny holiday destination with blue skies and a very bright sun. This connotes warmth and wealth because it shows that they are in a highly exotic holiday area, obviously portraying they have money and can afford there own villa, and a highly class place.
Camera work and mise’ en scene, is used to represent gender in the clip. Tracking is used in a stereotypical way. When following the woman’s legs, when she is walking the dog, following her along the side of the pool, with her high heels on and tanned legs, it is objectifying them, and saying that stereotypically, all men care about is looks and what the women are like on the outside. A high angle shot is also used in the clip looking down on to the women sat in the pool, to show she is a lower figure, and that people look down on women, just portraying them as sex symbols and nothing else. A low angle shot is also used looking up on the main male protagonist in the clip, showing that people look up to him, and that he is an important figure. A wide angle shot is used in the clip when all the characters are dancing around the pool, this shows all the components in the scene, with the men in there suits or shirts and women in there bikini’s, also with the palm trees around the pool, to connote the wealth of the characters. An ellipsis is also used at the start of the video when it cuts to another scene from the women on the phone, to the male sat down outside the pool; this is used to shorten time so that the video is continuous throughout, and can move to another scene without having to follow the women into the next area.
The sound involved in the clip is music used for the song. The music is a dance track, with fast paced music. The music is aimed at young adults/teenages because of the revolution nowadays, with younger people listening to dance music. The lyrics include “get a passport and your bikini, you need a holiday come see me, i know your tired of the same old scenery but I can change all that so easily” these lyrics are aimed at the young women looking to go on holiday looking for a man, to go and see him to party and have a good time. Only music involved is the sounds, there are no sounds effects as it is a popular chart song that doesn’t need any specific effects to be involved.

How I Asked For Feedback

I looked at other magazines with the same genre I had chosen and I researched into there sorts of ideas for my own magazine. When I was creating my magazine I asked my parents for some feedback and ideas on how to improve my magazine. I showed them images of my magazine design that I was producing. Most of the feedback I got back was positive but I also had a few suggestions on how to improve it. Aswell as asking my parents, I also asked other students to give me feedback on improvements that I could use to improve to appeal to a mainstream audience. They gave me a lot of feedback that helped me throughout my project so that it was the best of my ability, being a quality piece of work that would be a successful everyday magazine.

1) Question 1- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I have had a certain conventions to create a successful final product, I have created an effective masthead to go with the genre of the magazine, and I have also included this as a similar idea to a popular successful music magazine to make the final product as much like the real magazine as possible. Also I have taken my own pictures for the cover, using a main artist with medium close up shot following the conventions that an ideal magazine uses, for example not cutting body parts off, having the artist looking at the camera. This is so that the image looks like it would be on a normal cover. I have used mainstream audience idea so that my magazine would be for a wide verity of people that would want to buy it, just as a popular magazine would be aimed at, but although mine is aimed at a large audience, some popular magazines are aimed at a smaller more niche audience that would just use conventions to be aimed at the sort of people that would read the magazine.

Question 2- How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I have followed certain social backgrounds to appeal my magazine to, as I couldn’t aim it at every social demographic so I picked a few of the demographic to aim the magazine at, mine is aimed at C1, C2 and D. Which is semi-skilled workers and also labourers because it would be an affordable magazine, not aimed at amore higher paid job audience, and as it is a indie/rock magazine it would be more lower paid audience who enjoy the magazine as it would appeal to them.

Question 3- What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

IRM would be distributed by an independent company at the start, mainly because it is a new magazine. An independent company would sell IRM magazine for not much money to begin with because this will bring in the popularity of the magazine and also a little profit. After some time when the magazine has become established and become more popular with its audience a conglomerate company such as IPC Media or Bauer could sell the magazine at a higher price. This will make it more popular and bringing in higher ABC Circulation figures and a large profit. The readership would be able to access the product from monthly subscriptions to a conglomerate company and through newsagent shops.

Question 4- Who would be the audience for your media product?

My demographic target audience is mainly males and an audience of the age of 15-35. The target audience is average people with average lives and jobs that look up to big rock stars. The target audience would dress casually and wear jeans or tracky bottoms and wear casual t-shirts. My audience is people who would enjoys spending time with there friends and go to social events. Also they may be football fans because they enjoy watching and talking about it.

Question 5- How did you attract/address your audience?

IRM attracts its demographic audience by speaking to its audience in a peer to peer mode of address. The magazine front cover has an image of a not as famous and less popular rock star. This connotes to the audience an ideal self. This will attract the reader to buy the magazine. The photo on the front cover of a casual looking rock star addresses the readership to say it could happen to any one. Also this is connoted by a not as famous indie/rock star.

Question 6- What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

How to take photographs that have meaning to them. For example this photograph connotes a rock star attitude that thinks he is cool. I learnt that the photo needed to be a medium shot.

I have learnt how to use the software of Photoshop. Photoshop has allowed me to create my front cover. I have learnt how to use different fonts, shadows, banners, different colours shapes and tools to create my own music magazine. With the tools I learnt how to crop and cut images to make them to size.

Also I have learnt how to use QuarkXPress passport. I found this piece of software is better for creating products that involve mostly text, such as a contents page and a double page spread. I learnt who to link up text boxes to one an other so that text continues in one box after the other box is full, this gave me great help and saved me a lot of time when I was writing my double page spread article. I learnt how to create text boxes and rotate them with text in them to create effect on my media product. This is displayed in my final media product, the IRM double page spread has a pink banner on the top of the page. This was done through adding a text box and then making it pink. Also I learnt how to change the size of the gap in between text words.

I have learnt how to use cam studio. This enables me to show people what I have learnt through a video. I can record myself using the computer and save it as a cam studio video.

Question 7- looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

From the preliminary task I feel I have learnt a lot. I have learnt how us software of Photoshop such as photoshop. On photoshop I have learnt how to use different fonts, shadows, banners, different colours, shapes and tools to create my front cover for my own music magazine.
I have also learnt about software called QuarkXPress passport. QuarkXPress allowed me to create my contents, and double page spread. I learnt that QuarkXPress Passport is better to use for contents pages and double pages spreads, rather than a front cover because it its better to use for text. I learnt that QuarkXPress allows you to link up text boxes to one an other so that text continues in one box after the other box is full. Also I learnt on QuarkXPress how to use different colours text and different colour backgrounds to make my contents and double page spread look more appealing.
Also I have learnt how to use cam studio. Cam studio records what you are doing on your screen. This enabled me to create my on video of photoshop to demonstrate how to use it.
I have learnt about how pictures need to look on a contents page of a magazine. It needs to have no cluttered backgrounds. Also make sure to focus on lead singer if it is a band shot so the audience know who they are. If a single audience make sure it a medium shot- close up. Need to leave room for a masthead and don’t cut off heads. Also make sure it isn’t a high angle shot. Also animate your band- make sure they look at the camera

IPC Media

IPC media are a conglomerate that is owned by the Time Warner Group. IPC Media own music magazines such as the NME. NME stands for “New Musical Express” and this magazine is a big success as it brings publication of new bands and legendary bands through the NME awards. It targets a mainstream audience of middle aged men, between ages 20-35. They target this audience because it is for people like young adults and students. The magazine costs £2.20 so it is cheap for a popular music magazine and it is affordable for students to pay because approximately a third of NME’s readership is students. Also the sub genre of this magazine is Rock, indie and pop.
IPC Media own the Guitar and Bass magazine. This magazine is partly a music magazine but also could be classed as a more hardware and electrical magazine. This is also true with the HI-FI News. These two magazines cost around £4.00 each.In July to December 2008, the ABC Circulation Figures show that the NME magazine have sold 48,459 issues per month, However NME magazine have been hit hard with a loss of sales over the last six months and have lost over 8,000 sales. This shows why the price of the magazine is so cheap because they are trying to get people to buy it again. They’ve put the price to £2.20 to try and sell more, in order make more sales and create a profit.
At the moment NME are making £106609.80 which is a fairly good profit, however they are loosing £17600 which is a lot of money to loose, as their over all profit per a month should be £124209.80.

I will create my double page spread. I will use 1 of 3 of the images I took of my band on Tuesday. I will use the best and most suitable picture for a double page spread. My image of the band will be the band sat against a wall with there guitars and where sunglasses. On the picture the band will be wearing causal t-shirts, jeans and white trainers. I will put a catchy title on the left page. Also I will put the article I write on Tuesday on the left page. On the write page I will put the picture on the right page.

Bauer Research

Bauer media productions own Mojo, Kerrang and Q music magazine. The three magazines have different sub genres. Q magazine is a mainstream music magazine mainly focusing on pop and rock music. It is aimed at mainly male readers aged between 16-35. Q magazine is a monthly magazine that cost £3.90 per issue.
Mojo is a mainstream magazine that is aimed mainly at male readers aged 16-35.
Mojo magazine is a monthly magazine that costs £4.30 per issue.
Kerrang magazine is a mainstream music magazine mainly focusing on rock music. It is aimed at mainly female readers age 16-35.
The ABC Circulation figures indicate that Q magazine, had a major relaunch in the autumn of 2008, they managed to push an extra 10% of its readership and gain extra 10,000 sales. In months July to December 2008, Q sold around 103,000 issues. Q magazine sell there magazines at £3.95. So if they keep selling at this rate they could make a huge profit. For the issue in October 2008, they have made a massive profit of £406917 in Britain. Q targets its demographic audience with a moderate price tag, this is so its target audience can afford it (middle aged men and students and workers aged 16-35). With reference to the content of the magazine, Q has a house style of red and black in a serif font. This is continued through out the magazine weekly. Q use images of bands like Artic Monkeys to appeal to audiences as ideal selves as they have a rock star attitude. This helps create a role model for the readers and helps to target the demographic audience and sell the magazine.

Treatment
My final piece of work is an indie/rock magazine that is aimed at mainstream audience. The house style of my magazine is pink, black and white. The genre of my magazine is indie/rock and would be aimed at mainly males and an audience of the age of 15-35. The target audience is average people with average lives and jobs who look up to big rock stars. The target audience would dress casually and where jeans or tracky bottoms and wear casual t-shirts.

My band will be in the lead singers garage. My band will be casual and average and will be wearing jeans and a casual t-shirt. The props they use are guitars and microphones. In my band there will be 3 members (Jonny Manning, Tom Mansell and Chris Allen)
My photo design will be of the lead vocalist (of the regulars Jonny Manning) and the background will be of the garage for the front cover. The artist form the band (the regulars) will be wearing bright coloured casual t-shirts, jeans and white trainers. The poses of the band will be wearing props such as sun glasses and be shots where they look cool because they are an indie/rock band. This image will be on my front cover.

The contents image will be a band shot of the band walking towards the camera and this will be on the top right side of the contents page. They will be wearing the same cloths as they where wearing for the front cover image but they will all be wear jackets as well. Also they will all still be wearing the sunglasses. The image will be taken out side the garage with the garage door open. The band will be walking down the drive. It will be a low angle shot so the band looks dominate and looks cool.

For the double page spread I will use another band shot, but this time the band shot will taken of the band sat against a wall with there arms crossed and with there sun glasses on. They will be wearing casual t-shirt, jeans and white trainers. The image will be of them all talking to each other. The article will consist of a band interview and a band profile. There will be 4 columns of text from the interview of the band on the left hand page. The title of for the article will correspond to the masthead on the front cover, the same style, font and colour will be used to continue the house style. The photo of the band will be on the left page.

For health and safety I will move all objects out of the way so there not going to cause any problems. Also when out side tidy the area up we are using. Also I will make sure the environment is safe and clear of any hazards for health and safety reasons.

5 rules of taking a good cover image.
1) No cluttered backgrounds
2) Make sure you focus on lead singer if it is a band shot so the audience know who they are. If a single audience make sure its a medium shot- close up
3) Leave room for a masthead and dont cut off heads
4) No high angle shots
5) Animate your band- make sure they look at the camera

Analysis of Front Cover
The target demographic for the magazine MOJO is more targeted at an older audience aged between 30-50. It is aimed at both genders male and female. The audience would be wide. The mast head (MOJO) connotes get up and go and dance which is linked very well with the special issue because Motown music is feel good music and music you can dance to.
The main cover picture is of world famous Motown artist such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross and relates to main article topic. The main cover picture also has Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross directly gazing out at the reader. Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye are dresses in black suits and Diana Ross is dressed in a white dress. All three of the music artists are dressed like this because it makes them look smart and connotes a past era when they where famous.
The colours on the front cover for the main picture and background are black and white because this music is from around the 1960’s and the singers are all so from around the 1960’s. Also in the 1960’s the only photography’s where black and white so it looks like a photograph of them from back in the 1960’s. There is a little bit of colour on the front cover for more modern things such as modern music artist and there is gold writing for thinks such as “the greatest tracks” and golden starts are used for Stevie, Marvin and Diana’s names because gold and stars represent importance and famous.
Exclamation marks are used at the end of subtitles such as “free CD!” and “The Greatest Tracks!”. These exclamation marks are use to connote excitement and grab the readers attention.
The magazine includes a free CD to garb the buyer’s attention. The CD is stuck on the front cover and underneath where it was stuck on it say in small text “if your CD is missing please inform your newsagent”. The CD also advertised the magazine because it tells you what is on the CD and what is in the magazine.
The main Coverline has a much larger font size and runs across the middle of the page. The main Coverline say “MOTOWN” because this is the genre of the music.
The cover line is in capital letters so it stands out.
On the front cover there is a subtitle saying “9 for 9 new music preview” this makes the reader think that they know about which new artists are going to breakthrough this year and think they have the inside track on new music
The magazine has a bar code in the bottom corner. It also has the date and price in small print above the bar code in the bottom right corner of the page because it’s a stylish front cover so it won’t get in the way. Also the magazine is expensive because it is a classy magazine and also because it is targeted at an older audience and older people will have more money to pay for the magazine.

Analysis of Contents Page
The main picture on the contents is of Franz Ferdinand. They have been put on the contents page show that in this magazine there is more modern music not just Motown music. The picture is in black and white so it fits in with the theme of the front cover which is black and white and it also makes it look classy. Also when Motown music was around there were only black and white pictures, so it makes the magazine feel more old and classy.
The title is at the top of the page in larger font, bold text and also every letter is in capitals so it stands out. The magazine wants it to stand out because MOJO connotes get up and go and dance which is linked very well with the special issue because Motown music is feel good music and music you can dance to.
There is a subtitle that says features, this is to show the things that are only in this issue not in every issue. The word features is in a slightly larger font, bold text, capital writing and in the colour red so it stands out. They also use the colour red for the chapter numbers of the contents and the colour red for “FRANZ FERDINAD’S FAME N FISTICUFF’S”. The magazine uses the colour red because red connotes danger so it makes the band look cool and stands out a lot to the reader.
Each of the chapter headings on the cover is in a larger font, bold text and also every letter is in capitals, so it stands out. Also the writing is in white text because it stands out from the black back ground
It also has the data of the magazine and the issue so the reader knows that they’ve got the latest issue.
On the contents page it says “2648 West Grand Boulevard” this is the location of the Motown museum in Detroit this links to the issue been one to celebrate 50 years since the launch of Motown records.

Analysis of Double Page Spread
On this double page spread the headline “THE AMERICAN DREAM” is in a larger font, bold text and also every letter is in capitals, so it stands out from the rest of the double spread page so the reader knows what the article is about before they begin to read it. The word “DREAM” in the headline is in gold text because the gold connotes that when they first launched Motown music it was only a dream that it would be come as well known as it is today.
The article is about American singer Iggy Pop. He talks about how he grew up with Motown music and tells the audience how it makes him fells. There is a picture of Iggy Pop directly gazing out at the audience. This is to draw the attentions reader towards the audience.
Also at the top of the page there is a title saying “THE 100 GREATEST MOTOWN SONGS” in gold text. Gold text is used because the 100 songs on the next few pages are rated the best ever Motown songs of all time and also experts giving there opinion songs.
The picture on the right page of the double spread is a picture of Stevie Wonder singing in to a micro phone. The picture is made up of many famous Motown CD covers made by Motown records released. The picture of Stevie Wonder (made up by Motown CDs) is very colourful and has a whit background so it stands out. The picture is very colourful because Motown music is feel good music.
